The SCENAR device is a small hand-held unit which works through your skin (transdermal). It can be applied to most problem areas which are causing pain. It was first developed by the Russians for use by the cosmonauts so they could have a means of treating themselves without the need for drugs while they were in space.
It uses computer-modulated, electrical impulses to stimulate your brain (electroneuro-stimulator) which interacts with the nerves of the painful region. The brain responds with its own signal which is picked up by the SCENAR device. The SCENAR device then interprets the brain’s response and modifies its next impulse back to the brain to work at restoring balance to the body (this is called Active Reflex Biofeedback). The brain, in turn, sends a modified response (and so on) until equilibrium is achieved (homeostasis). During this ‘conversation’ of constantly varying electrical frequencies and waveforms, the brain also instructs the nervous system to generate neuropeptides (the key biochemicals needed by your body to heal itself- the body’s own pharmacy). This is what the body was designed to do.
After an injury or onset of disease the communication system between the brain and the affected body part can ‘break down’ or ‘get used to’ the signal coming from that part of the body. The brain begins accept the abnormal signal as ‘normal’. This can be a reason why many conditions become chronic and unresponsive to treatment. SCENAR breaks the body out of this habit and restores correct communication resulting in effective and more complete healing.
The electrical impulses from the SCENAR device have been specifically designed to contain numerous random features to prevent the body from ‘adapting’ to the stimulation and to help the body continue the healing process to its completion.
Because of its unique computer-controlled biofeedback capabilities and ability to stimulate neuropeptide generation, the SCENAR achieves excellent healing results. SCENAR is very different from other electrotherapy instruments such as the TENS machine. Only the SCENAR combines energy measuring functions along with real-time feedback and constant adjustment to deliver just the correct type and amount of energy to the body. The SCENAR treatment produces both local effects ( stimulates skin and blood vessels) and a general influence (by affecting both neural and hormonal regulation systems).
What does a SCENAR treatment involve?
The practitioner will hold on your skin and adjust it until you feel a ‘pricking’ or ‘tingling’ sensation. It may feel slightly uncomfortable but should never be painful.
The therapist will take a diagnostic reading of your nervous system by placing the SCENAR along your spine, neck and either side of your spine and recording readings the device gives out. This is a great way to pin-point a possible ‘blockage’ in the nervous system.
The SCENAR device is then brushed gently over the body looking for ‘sticky’ or resistant areas. This process continues until either there are no more sticky or resistant points. During this period there may be reactions from the nervous system which can appear in an area turing pale or red, the device becoming louder or you may feel some areas more intense than others.
The treatment session ranges from 30min- 60mins depending on the problem that is being treated.
The aim is to achieve a ‘Change In Dynamic’ which simply means a change in the nervous system’s response.
It is not uncommon to feel worse after a SCENAR session. Do not be alarmed if you feel worse. This is actually a really good sign as the nervous system is responding to the treatment and a change is occurring. Typically, you should see some form of improvement after 3 sessions of SCENAR treatment. A full course of treatment can, however, last up to 12 or more sessions, depending on the nature of the injury and whether it is an acute pain or a more stubborn chronic condition
What conditions can SCENAR therapy help with?
- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Sports injuries
- Knee pain
- Shoulder pain
- Headaches / migraines
- Golfers and tennis elbow
- Healing of fractures and broken bones
- Circulatory and respiratory problems
- Musculoskeletal and digestive problems
- ....and many other conditions
Who can benefit from SCENAR therapy?
Anyone- young or old- who has suffered an injury or is experiencing either chronic or acute pain may benefit from SCENAR therapy
Is SCENAR therapy safe?
SCENAR is licensed for use in Australia for pain relief. As a SCENAR impulse is similar to the body’s own nerve impulses, it is non-damaging and safe. However, it is recommended that people with cardiac pacemakers or those suffering from epilepsy do not have this treatment. It is also advised that SCENAR therapy not be used on pregnant women. It is safe, however, to use on children and the elderly.
A word of warning
You MUST NOT use SCENAR therapy if you have a pace maker or defibrillator as the impulses from the SCENAR can interfere with signals to your heart!!
